Maharashtra Diwas
Among the various special day observed in India, one of the important day is birth anniversary of the famous Marathi author Kusumagraj. Every year on this day ie; 27 February "Marathi Diwas" is celebrated in entire Maharashtra, India and worldwide. He had a great hand in developing the mere language and penned down various poems, plays, stories, essays, and many more.
There are numerous seminars, cultural shows organized on this day as a mark of respect to the eminent personality.
On "Marathi Diwas" let us see some of the mouth-watering Maharashtrian Cusines that has interesting blends of flavors. The food here is diverse because of many communities that cover a range from mild to very spicy dishes.
Sabudana Vada
Sabudana Vada is a traditional deep fried snack. Sabudana (sago) is soaked and mixed with boiled potatoes, spices and chilies. This dish is best accompanied by coconut chutney or a cup of Chai. This is mostly consumed during fasts.
Kothimbir Vadi
This delicious crispy snack is made with gram flour, spices and coriander leaves. As the name suggests "Kothimbir" means Coriander and "Wadi" means cubes. The cubes are either deep fried or shallow fried.
Pithale Bhakri with Thecha
This traditional marathi dish is made with chickpeas or besan flour cooked with ginger garlic paste, onions, cumin mustard seeds and curry leaves. The "bhakri" is made out of bajra, rice or jowar rotis, while the "thecha" is made out of red chilies crushed with garlic and groundnuts.
Thalipeeth
Thalipeeth is served with ghee or chutney or pickle or curd. This Indian pancake is made with corn flour, chopped onions, tomatoes, cumin seeds, spices, salt and chilies. It is a popular breakfast that can also be considered to be served in lunch and dinner.
Usal/Misal Pav
Usal is spicy gravy prepared with sprouts. The gravy is garnished with mix farsan, coriander leaves, onion and tomatoes. Pav (bread) is accompanied to make it less spicy.
Batata Vada
Being in Maharashtra one cannot think of ignoring Batata Vada. The delicacy is prepared with potatoes, mixed in masalas and dipped in gram flour batter and then deep fried. Well served with pav, fried chilies, chutneys and chopped onions.
Soul Kadhi
It is literally the soul of Maharashtra cuisine and mostly found in Konkan region. The Kadhi is accompanied with food, prepared from kokum extract and coconut milk.
Modak
Lord Ganesha's favorite food "Modak" is made of rice flour stuffed with a mixture of jaggery, dry fruits and coconut. They are either steamed or fried. Steamed one's are my favorite.
Puran Poli
The sweet flatbread is prepared from chana dal, flour, jaggery, cardamom power and ghee. The melt in the mouth is done with oodles of Ghee. There is a tradition of making Puran poli in some of the festivals.
